UPPER DARBY — The Upper Darby-Lansdowne Rotary Club, with a matching grant from Gundaker, Rotary 7450 Foundation, contributed $2,000 to Murphy’s Giving Market earlier this month.
Murphy’s Giving Market is a largely volunteer organization that provides food and mobilizes resources to end food insecurity for families in the Upper Darby community.
Murphy’s Giving Market began at the start of the pandemic, when Desiree Lamarr-Murphy set up a free market in her yard for neighbors who had lost their jobs and had found it difficult to find the resources to feed their families.
Quickly, the lines outside of Desiree’s house stretched around the block.
With support from Philabundance, Murphy’s Giving Market moved into a rented building on West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, and began operating a free food pantry, which is open three days a week.
Shoppers select from fresh produce, meat and fish, canned and dry goods and grains, eggs, dairy, baked goods, and other staples.
